Wet Weather Racing Causes Concern

Fernando Alonso - 2007 Japanese Grand PrixMany leading Formula One drivers have opened dialogue with the FIA over the concerns they have with racing in wet weather in 2008. The primary concern centres around the banning of traction control and incidents that occurred during 2007. David Coulthard, an advocate of safety in the sport, has spoken to Charlie Whiting about plans and procedures the race director will follow this year. The hope is to agree on when a race is too dangerous to run or continue. Many drivers have stated that the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix could not have been held with cars that do not have electronic aids such was the atrocious weather at the time. However, FIA president Max Mosley has refuted the drivers concerns and put forward a ridiculous reason for his argument. Continue Reading

What You Can’t See Can’t Hurt You

Looking Through RainTraveling at close to 200mph, a racing driver has to absorb a lot of information in order to be as effective as possible. Looking through his visor, a typical pilot has to not only control the car through corners and over the undulations on the track surface, but also has to communicate with his team via the radio, adjust settings on the car via the steering wheel controls and concentrate on where the car is heading as well as being aware of what is around him, both in front and behind. So it comes as a bit of a surprise that what a racing driver actually sees is incredibly limited. Through the visor, the primary view is the steering wheel and a small amount of outside world just above that. Let’s wonder just how that looks, with a little help of real-world comparisons.
