BMW & Honda: Opposing Parallels?

BMW are making for interesting viewing at the moment, the former Sauber team looking to be on the verge of their maiden win and thinking slightly longer-term, on the verge of their maiden constructor’s title. But this evening, while sitting in The Blogger’s Dog, it struck me that the team have very similar experience to another on the grid. The other team has gone that bit further and taken a victorious drink of Mumm, but in all honesty, that moment is all but a distant memory among the torrid battles with a woefully uncompetitive car. Formula One Factories: BMW Sauber

BMW Sauber Factory - Hinwil, SwitzerlandIn a new series of posts, BlogF1 will take you on a tour of the Formula One factories. These structures are the homes of F1 teams, where the cars are designed, tested (in wind tunnels) and built. Most teams are currently situated in the UK, which might seem a little odd upon first thought. But as most races are still in Europe and given the strong economy and high-skilled work force, Britain isn’t actually as odd of a choice as you might think. The only grievance the teams occasionally voice is that they have to buy left-hand drive transporters as most driving is done in continental Europe (and thus they drive on the right as opposed to the left). Currently four teams reside outside of the UK; Ferrari, STR, Toyota and BMW. Continue Reading

Nick Heidfeld: A Certain Amount Of Respect

Nick Heidfeld - Testing Aerodynamic Efficiencies of a BeardI have a certain respect for Nick Heidfeld. To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know why, but never-the-less, that small amount of respect is there. He is no faster than any other driver, he is no more intelligent nor does he possess any more charisma or flamboyance than his fellow racers. But each race he turns up, generally keeps his head down and quietly goes about the business of thrashing a Formula One car around a circuit. In many respects, his attitude towards his work is much like my own, and maybe it is because of that I find a small smile creep across my face when the German driver does well.
