He had a disastrous weekend in Valencia, but somehow Luca Badoer managed to ride through and keep his seat for this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. Prior to qualifying and the race though, Badoer was snapped in his garage sharing a few words with Bernie Ecclestone. What could the pair have been talking about?

With the imminent release of the latest installment in the Terminator film franchise during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend this year, the paddock was a flurry of merchandise and props all in a bid to promote the motion picture. Here we have Jenson Button laughing with his boss, Ross Brawn, but what do you suppose they’ve done to the Terminator to cause them to giggle?

Here we have Rubens Barrichello in Monaco earlier this year. A part of the new rules for 2009 states that drivers have to make themselves available for autographs and interviews during the course of a race weekend. However, when Rubens’s PA told him he needed to sign a breast, I’m not sure this is exactly what he envisaged at the time…

The ninety-fifth photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. With the news that Sebastien Bourdais has been dumped by Scuderia Toro Rosso in favour of upcoming driver Jaime Alguersuari, I thought I would return the Caption Contest with a shot of the French driver. Here is Sebastien at the German Grand Prix being interviewed on the Thursday before his final race. Not that he knew it at the time, of course.

The ninety-fourth photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. Everybody and their grandma is tweeting apparently. The BBC have embraced the online app that simply asks, “What are you doing?”. Even the Formula One teams have been getting in on the action and interacting with fans and sharing information. As here’s a shot of Heikki Kovalainen doing just that in the McLaren Technical Centre in Woking. But what is he writing? To make it even more fun, try and keep your comment to no more than 140 characters.

Also, comments may not be moderated for the next three days. I apologise in advance, but I’m out of the country. I’m gonna guess and say that I will have Internet access where I am, but I do not intend to spend the rest of the week glued to a monitor (and my phone is being turned off). If your comment goes to moderation, I do apologise, and I will sort it out once I return.

Oh, McLaren’s Twitter account is here, and mine is here. BlogF1 does have a dedicated account as well, but it only really gets updated when a new post is published.

The ninety-second photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. Following on from the previous Caption Contest, Ollie has been able to track down exactly what happened with regards to the flurry of Nick-Captions and it appears that while feeling slightly bad for not being around for one of the most glamorous races of the year (although perhaps also one of the least interesting thus far), and after finding some funny images of lil’ Heidi, the <strike>devil</strike> orangutan on the left shoulder shouted louder than the <strike>angel</strike> orangutan on the right shoulder and BlogF1 went a little bit crazy for a while. But you have to admit though, this is pretty darn funny…

Image © BMW AG.

And yes, I did have to look-up the correct spelling of oo-rang-a-tang. And yes, I am assuming that is an orangutan. What, you actually think I know what I’m doing!?

The ninety-first photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. I’m not entirely sure what is going on, but BlogF1 appears to have been taken over by Nick Heidfeld fans who are intent on publishing photos of the BMW driver in odd situations that would be ideal for captioning. Currently, Ollie is tracking down the perpetrator/s and thinks they might be located somewhere inside his own mind. While the investigations continue though, please feel free to pass the time by adding amusing lines to the image…

The ninetieth photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. I know, I know, Ollie’s actually posted something for the first time in almost two weeks! I apologise for the sudden silence, and I certainly wasn’t expecting the amount of emails and comments that were received and were all lovely and kind – thank you to all. I honestly didn’t think too many folks would notice – I guess I was wrong!

My sudden absence was down to real-life work unexpectedly becoming quite serious for a few days, and although I won’t say exactly what happened, it was all hands on deck in the week leading up to the Monaco Grand Prix. By the time I finished my extended week on Saturday afternoon, I decided I wanted to get away for a couple of days. So I indulged myself in my other passion – surfing (this is the ’sport’ I actually [attempt to] do from time to time). The water was a bit lame, but that did mean I had no excuse to miss the Monaco Grand Prix and I took over the TV in a local public house and watched the race with a pint and chat with some locals.

I’m aware I have an awful lot of catching up to do; Ferrari were defeated in the courts, further discussions, all might be saved, some are expecting a couple of manufacturers to still quit, etc…* Normal service will slowly resume as I get back into the habit; you wouldn’t believe how out of practice I feel just trying to write a caption contest post – it may take me a couple of days before I’m back in the full flow. But as I always say, one thing at a time. So without further ado, here’s a long overdue photograph to caption. And this time it is Nick Heidfeld standing outside the BMW motorhome in Spain, probably wondering where all his birthday party guests are. I think the line goes something like: “They’re behind you!”

Image © BMW AG.

*Apparently all is not as well as I thought. Williams have been suspended by FOTA as they say they will/have already entered the 2010 championship. Yep, I have lots of reading to do…

I decided that posting a photo to caption last week would have been a little inappropriate given the news that occurred on the same day, so this week’s image to add a line to is early to make up for it. Here’s Kimi Raikkonen enjoying a nap on the end of the pitwall back in his McLaren days.

If anyone else has been to a grand prix or event where you’ve been able to capture a Formula One driver or personality that you think might be funny/strange enough for a caption, feel free to email them to ollie [at] blogf1.co.uk. If you do submit a photo, be sure to give a name whom copyright should belong to and any information behind the picture (who/what/where…).

A big thanks to Sidepodcast for submitting this great photo.

Ferrari recently announced a shake up in their staff in an effort to iron out the mistakes they have been making so far in the 2009 season. Michael Schumacher was, rightly or wrongly, implicated in Kimi Raikkonen’s switch to full wets in Malaysia, while Luca Baldisseri is to remain at the factory and head up developments to improve the F60.

As the weather is slowly warming in the UK, and following Kimi Raikkonen’s antics in Sepang last weekend, I thought I’d make this week’s caption about ice cream. But does Kimi know Mark has found his secret stash of Magnums?

You may notice that BlogF1 appears a little different over the next couple of weeks. This post is just to warn you of a few changes and a few things that may not look exactly as they have done for the past year or so. Currently, I’m working hard behind the scenes on the site’s 2009 refresh. I won’t go into detail here as I want to save that for the day I eventually put the rejingle up, but suffice to say some of the background code has been altered in preparation for this and while the bells and whistles aren’t quite ready yet, some elements of BlogF1 will look odd.

You could say I’m testing some things live, so to speak, and I’m currently pulling my hair out because of weird conflicts with some of the code. This is the primary reason why I would like to quietly test a few bits out here rather than the development site – having ~1500 posts and many more comments to play with makes testing a lot easier, and being perfectly honest, I couldn’t be bothered to copy the database over to devBF1.

What this means is, as I myself have just discovered, the previous caption contest photo this week <strike>utilises the lightbox fanciness I used many years ago, but because the image is linked, it is underlined with the regular dotted line now found on other links</strike> …scratch that, it doesn’t anymore – conflicts with this version’s code. I could fiddle the old CSS to prevent this, but I would rather concentrate on finalising v6.5 than spend time on something that is already dilapidated (in my mind, anyway). So in advance, I offer my apologies. Although it should not effect the functionality of the site, nor will BlogF1 fall over (hopefully). The worse that will happen is that you might notice a few odd details that look different to what you are used to.

And no, do not panic, the make-over due is just a refresh; unlike the FIA I know when something isn’t necessarily broken. BlogF1 is not being redesigned, just refreshed. You’ll like it, I promise. It should be a bit faster as well, which will be a comfort to most, I’m sure.

And yes, you may consider this the missed Caption Contest from last week. At the time, I was snowed under with real-life work and the preparation for the Australian Grand Prix. So, erm, feel free to caption away…

The eighty-third photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. From the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, here we have the annual Formula One class photo, showing each of the drivers taking part at the start of the season. Amazingly given the circumstances, there are twenty drivers present, but already we can see the effects cost-cutting is having on the sport; only Ferrari, McLaren and Renault can afford sunglasses.

This was lightboxed so you could see the the driver’s expressions more clearly, then it wasn’t. Now it’s just linked. Click through, then use the back button in your browser to return and leave a hilariously funny comment about Ollie’s inability to code! Explanation here.

You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. Another image from the 2008 archive, here we have hotshot Sebastian Vettel in the Scuderia Toro Rosso garage during the Spanish Grand Prix. Although himself and Nicolas Todt aren’t actually in each others faces, the way the photo was taken would certainly make it appear as if they were. Handbags at dawn?

The 2006 Monaco Grand Prix saw Red Bull Racing score their very first podium, much to the delight of David Coulthard and team boss Christian Horner (who jumped into the Red Bull swimming pool wearing little more than a pair of Speedo’s and a Superman cape). Of course, the team were helping to promote the new Superman film, but how come there’s three of them!?

You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. I can’t believe I completely forgot to post Wednesday’s caption – I notice nobody reminded me! Well, if it’s any consolation, I enjoyed the short break I took from work work and blogging (which really isn’t work). So anyway, late as it is, here’s number 76. A football match from a few years ago involving F1FC – the drivers sometimes play to help raise money for charity as well as having a bit of fun. In the case of Felipe and Michael, maybe a bit too much fun…

The seventy-fifth photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. Going back to 2003, this is an image of Jaguar driver Justin Wilson. The British driver spent most of the season in a Minardi, but Ford soon snapped him up to replace Antonio Pizzonia for the last five races of the year. At 1.93m, Justin always had difficulty fitting in the petite cars, but did score a point in his short career F1 career. Since his F1 days, Wilson has found more success in America, racing in the Champ Car and IndyCar series. But perhaps more importantly, what is he doing to the lady sitting his car?

The seventy-third photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. This week we have a special photo to caption. Not only is it the first Red Bull/STR related image in a while, but it is also a reader-submitted picture, taken by regular BlogF1 commenter Pink Peril. Pink emailed me over the photo late last year, but as Mark Webber then broke his leg, I decided to wait until the Australian was on the road to recovery before we all took the mickey out of him. Pink snapped this photo of Mark (with a trademark funny expression) at the 2008 Australian Grand Prix, but what could the Red Bull driver be looking at or thinking about…

If anyone else has been to a grand prix or event where you’ve been able to capture a Formula One driver or personality that you think might be funny/strange enough for a caption, feel free to email them to ollie [at] blogf1.co.uk*. If you do submit a photo, be sure to give a name whom copyright should belong to and any information behind the picture (who/what/where…).

With thanks to Pink Peril for the Mark the Jim Carrey of F1 Webber image. Pink Peril often writes for F1-Pitlane, a collaboration-blog of many site owners and commenters from the F1-blogosphere.

*Or submit link to Flickr (or similar) page, but if ownership of image cannot be proved, the picture will not be used. [/disclaimer]

The seventy-first photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. To get us into the party mood for New Year’s Eve, here’s a picture of Michael Schumacher and Flavio Briatore celebrating by wearing silly glasses and silly wigs (oh, actually, Briatore’s hair is real, I think). It was taken when the pair worked for Benetton in the early-mid-’90s. My guess would be that it is a celebratory shot after Schumacher won his first title in 1994.

The seventieth photograph to feature in BlogF1’s caption contest. You know the drill, think of something funny and witty to say and leave it as a comment below. Like with last year, this caption contest is a little late in order to tie in with Christmas Day. And also in parallel with last year, it’s a wintery image. Here we have Tiago Monteiro and Narain Karthikeyan at the launch of the 2005 Jordan. The reason for the snow is that Midland had just purchased the team from Eddie Jordan, and although they raced under the Jordan name for the ‘05 season, they were owned by Russian-born but Canadian-resident Alex Shnaider. Hence the chilly Moscow launch for the EJ15.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish every reader and contributor of BlogF1 a very merry Christmas, happy holidays and a peaceful December 25th. I hope the new year brings prosperity and happiness to you all.
