The 2008 Monaco Grand Prix hasn’t long finished, but already there are news stories coming out of the principality that add further light to the exciting and intriguing race that was held under changeable weather conditions. Among the most interesting quotes is McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh admit that Lewis Hamilton’s MP4-23 finished the race with a puncture. Also, Adrian Sutil has been reprimanded for overtaking under yellow flags, taking the wind of Mike Gascoyne’s sails after he was upset with Raikkonen’s accident that saw Sutil’s retirement. Adrian Sutil drove a magnificent Monaco Grand Prix today, there can be little doubt about that. The Force India driver lined up at the back of the grid but somehow managed to threaten the top runners during the race. Sutil almost made it to the finish line before being taken out by reigning champion Kimi Raikkonen, the incident being little more than a simple racing accident. In what was easily the finest race of the season so far, Lewis Hamilton has sensationally won from third on the grid. The afternoon didn’t go perfectly for McLaren as team mate Heikki Kovalainen was unable to follow Hamilton to the front of the pack. However, with changing conditions during the race, time limits coming into force and altering strategies as the laps counted down, each team earned their money today. Lewis Hamilton has won the Monaco Grand Prix in what was a wonderfully superb race that had many twists and turns. Robert Kubica brought his BMW home in second place ahead of Felipe Massa in a race that saw two safety cars, dry and wet tyres and a multitude of leaders and fastest lap owners. Mark Webber collected five points from his fourth-placed finish, and Sebastian Vettel claimed four points, his first of the season. Rubens Barrichello, Kazuki Nakajima and Heikki Kovalainen round out the rest of the points finishes. Continue Reading

In the second qualifying session at Monaco earlier today, David Coulthard lost control of his Red Bull and after clouting the barrier once, skidded down the escape road at the Harbour Chicane and thumped the wall for a second time. Unfortunately, the television cameras only picked up a stray wheel initially, but having seen a replay of the first part of the accident, it is understandable why Coulthard considers himself lucky to have not been seriously injured. In an important qualifying session that saw many drivers show their worth by setting fast laps, it was Felipe Massa who eventually got the last laugh with an impressive tour of Monaco that enabled him to pip his team mate and claim the pole for tomorrow’s race. Speaking in the press conference after a stunning qualifying session, the diminuative Brazilian was visibly happy, relaxed and even a little surprised by his own performance. Felipe Massa has taken pole position for tomorrow’s Monaco Grand Prix with a last-gasp fast lap. In a thrilling session that saw quick laps from a variety of drivers, it was Ferrari who came away on top with Kimi Raikkonen taking the over front-row slot next to his team mate. McLaren lost out to the Scuderia with Lewis Hamilton in third and Heikki Kovalainen in fourth. BMW only had one driver in Q3 has Nick Heidfeld lost out earlier in Q2, but Robert Kubica managed fifth ahead of Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso. Continue Reading

During yesterday’s second free practice session at Monaco, Renault driver Fernando Alonso damaged his R28 chassis while exiting T1. The famous Ste Devote corner - a sharp right-hander that leads onto the hill - caught Alonso’s team mate out only minutes prior to Fernando’s incident, and because of his actions, the stewards have had a chat with the double world champion. Lewis Hamilton has jumped to the top of the timing sheet in the afternoon practice session, leading Nico Rosberg who has put in two stellar performances today in his Williams FW30. The margin at the top increased with the Ferraris having to settle for third and fourth for Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa respectively. Both Renaults suffered after lunch with Nelson Piquet Jr and Fernando Alonso damaging their R28 chassis. Piquet was the first of the Renaults to clout the barriers at Ste Devote, spinning around and damaging his rear wing. A few minutes later, Alonso followed suit getting his R28 tail-happy and tagging the armco with his left-rear corner. Continue Reading

Monaco is considered to be a challenge like no other for Formula One drivers; the twisting nature of the circuit and proximity of the unforgiving barriers heighten the concentration needed of even the most intense of racers. History tells us that Ayrton Senna and Graham Hill are the undisputed masters of all-time, Senna heading the record books with six wins to Hill’s five. In recent times, Michael Schumacher managed to tame the beast on five occasions as well, edging out Alain Prost on four.
