Kimi Raikkonen has dominated the Malaysian Grand Prix, winning with outright pace after the first round of pit stops. Although the pass on team mate Felipe Massa was made in the pit lane, it was Kimi’s sensational in-lap that sealed the deal for Finn. It wasn’t all plain-sailing for Ferrari though as Massa failed to finish again. McLaren collected a few points and did the best they could from their starting positions, while the second podium of 2008 saw a different three drivers receive trophies. Continue Reading

Not everyone thought they could do it. Following Michael Schumacher’s retirement from competitive racing, the year out and subsequent leaving of Ross Brawn and a fairly major shake-up of other key staff at Ferrari, few thought they’d actually be able to continue their winning ways. But in 2007, win they did. The final race saw Kimi Raikkonen collect a long overdue and deserved championship. A few races previous the team had seized the constructors and the Scuderia had succeeded. But it wasn’t all plain-sailing, and 2008 is going to be difficult for a number of reasons. Continue Reading

On the final day of testing at Spain’s Valencia circuit Kimi Raikkonen went fastest ahead of fellow Finn Heikki Kovalainen. The margin was small, only 0.017s separated the pair, the Ferrari sandwich completed with Felipe Massa in third a further 0.5s down. Second McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton finished his week in fifth losing out to Kazuki Nakajima in the new Williams for the first time. The Grove team have had a good few days in Valencia with their new car and head to Bahrain with optimism. Continue Reading

When I learned to drive, many, many years ago, I was appalled at the costs involved. It seemed as though the DVLA were out to swindle every new motorist of their hard earned cash. It seemed like they were charging a lot of money for, in essence, a piece of paper. But in hindsight I probably shouldn’t have been so much of a curmudgeon, as today I have learned just how much a Formula One super license costs. And it’s a lot. Combined with the fact that it only lasts a year and must be re-purchased before the season starts again, the money that leaves each teams pocket is phenomenal. And it just got a whole lot worse. It was a busy fortnight for Formula One, with several teams launching their new cars and the first official test of the year at Spain’s Jerez circuit. We saw Ferrari looking good with their F2008, McLaren looking promising and Nick Heidfeld driving his BMW F1.08 inside. Away from the circuit we also heard of some changes to rules and a possible budget cap for 2009. Finally, ITV received some bad news from their sponsor just two months before 2008 kicks off. The first official test of 2008 got underway today at Spain’s Jerez circuit. It was the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen who dominated in the new F2008 car, only recently launched earlier in the month. Although Raikkonen set the quickest time by 0.3s, Massa’s day wasn’t without hindrance as he ground to a halt partway through the session. However, from the times set it does look like the 2008 Ferrari, which is still being heavily developed, will surely be able to compete for another title this season. Continue Reading
