Drivers Protest Over Grid Access Refusal For Physiotherapists

When Martin Brundle took to the grid this morning for his inaugural grid-walk of 2010, the former driver warned viewers that there would be very few drivers lurking about. Brundle went on to explain that in a strange decision by the powers-that-be, the physiotherapists who look after the drivers have had their access passes revoked. In protest at not having these key people with them on the grid, the drivers all agreed to leave the track and return to their respective garages once they had parked their cars up. And indeed, the grid was looking notably driver-free. Of the current grid of pilots, Brundle only managed to catch a quick word with Fernando Alonso.

The drivers are insisting that they need their physios on the grid with them to ensure they are in perfect physical condition prior to starting the grand prix. In the past, the start/finish line has always been a flurry of people, including those bystanders handing their drivers fluids, towels and other paraphernalia that goes with their jobs.

According to a leading driver who has spoken to Autosport but wishes to remain anonymous, the drivers are angry at not being allowed to have their physios with them and have stated that the protest will continue at the next race in Australia if the passes are not re-issued.

Bernie Ecclestone has retorted by saying that he believes the grid is too busy, filled with too many unnecessary people. Ecclestone has told the drivers that if they want extra people on the grid, they need to organise the passes with their teams. However, with strict controls on how many passes are handed out, they are in very short supply.

Martin Brundle summed it up quite well while commentating his wander through the cars, saying that the grid is usually a hive of activity, with celebrities and stars mixing with drivers and team staff. Alas, the Bahrain grid was just lightly-littered with dignitaries and ex-champions, having just completed their own parade to celebrate 60 years of the World Championship.

Following qualifying for the opening race of the 2010 Formula One World Championship, here is the grid order for tomorrow’s Bahrain Grand Prix. Should any penalties occur or changes made between now and the race the grid will be updated to reflect this. Sebastian Vettel will start the Bahrain Grand Prix from the left side of the grid on the softer compound tyre he qualified on. All top-ten drivers, who have to start the race on the tyre they set their fastest lap on, will start with the super-soft compound with the exception of Adrian Sutil who qualified in P10 on the more durable medium tyre. Tyre compounds for the top-ten are listed next to the lap times.

The grid has finally been completed for the Brazilian Grand Prix after the session was deluged under heavy rain and thunderstorms. However, despite all the problems that the drivers endured around the Interlagos circuit, it was Rubens Barrichello who took pole position and will lead the field through the Senna Esses at the start of tomorrow’s race. Jenson Button struggled back in P14 and starts only two places ahead of fellow rival Sebastian Vettel who qualified in P16.

Update: Vitantonio Liuzzi had his gearbox changed after qualifying and therefore drops five places on the grid, promoting Sebastian Vettel and all those behind.

Japan 2009: The Grid, Maybe

Please note, this grid is very much subject to change. The FIA have stated they will publish the final grid prior to the race on Sunday morning, and until then we are all left to guess. The reason for the sudden disruption to the regular running is because of the unusually high number of penalties handed out before, during and after qualifying. So far, nine drivers have accepted some form of penalty and therefore had their grid position altered. Prior to qualifying commencing, Mark Webber elected to start from the pitlane (although the Australian didn’t have much choice in the matter) as his car was being rebuilt following an earlier practice shunt. Timo Glock, if well enough to race, will also be starting from the pitlane.

Should Toyota or the FIA decide Glock is not fit enough to take part in the Japanese Grand Prix – remember, the German is also recovering from a fever – and presuming test and reserve driver Kamui Kobayashi is allowed to stand-in, then he will undoubtedly start from the pitlane.

Just before qualifying started, Force India changed the gearbox in Vitantonio Liuzzi’s car, meaning the Italian would be demoted five places regardless of where he qualified. As it turned out, Liuzzi qualified plum-last anyway, and so will start at the back of the grid, albeit ahead of the two pitlane starters. For reference, drivers starting from the pitlane are not allowed to leave the pits until the final car has passed the pit exit, assuming all cars actually make it that far, that is.

During qualifying, a number of drivers were found to have not backed off enough while passing yellow flags. The waved yellow flag indicates that a driver must slow down as there is a problem ahead, which is usually a car that has spun off into the gravel. For obvious reasons, it isn’t wished upon any following driver that they too spin off and instead of gracefully coming to a stop in the gravel, they instead slam into a stationary car. Double waved yellows indicates that a driver has to slow right down and be prepared to stop. This is shown when marshals are on the track.

Given the high number of incidents during qualifying earlier, there were quite a lot of yellow flags being waved, and some drivers were deemed to have not heeded them as well as they should have. Adrian Sutil, Rubens Barrichello, Jenson Button, Sebastien Buemi and Fernando Alonso each fell foul of the rule book and their own telemetry, and each received a five grid place penalty.

After qualifying, McLaren decided to change Heikki Kovalainen’s gearbox, demoting the Finnish driver from his original P9 to a post-penalty P13.

You’ve already asked the question in your head, no doubt… how has Kovalainen received a five grid slot penalty, but only moved down the order by four places? This is because Formula One likes to make it a little bit more complicated, but it is actually quite fair. Penalties are always issued in the order that the offense was committed. Therefore, Mark Webber was initially moved to the pitlane and essentially, P20 before qualifying started. Vitantonio Liuzzi was second to receive the elbow, and therefore definitely starts at the back of the grid. Liuzzi can still opt to start from the pitlane, but all things considered, he is probably better off where he is.

The last of the penalties receivers, so far, is Heikki Kovalainen. Therefore, all the yellow-flag-ignorers have had their demotions applied before Heikki gets his. And therefore, in a hopefully ultimate tone, will start in P13. Unfortunately, we do not yet know the exact order the yellow-flag offenses were committed, and so we do not know the final grid order. This grid is likely to change and is just a guesstimate.

Interestingly, Autosport seem to be under the impression Mark Webber will start behind Timo Glock in the pitlane. Although from my understanding, Glock received his punishment after Webber (and boy, it was more punishment than I think he was bargaining for), and so therefore is penalised after Mark. Which would surely put Timo just behind the Red Bull driver in the pitlane.

Either way, here is my stab at the grid for the 2009 Japanese Grand Prix.

Following qualifying for tomorrow’s Singapore Grand Prix held at night time under the artificially-lit street circuit, we can now see the grid in its entirety, including any penalties received. So far, only one driver has been demoted from their original qualifying position, Rubens Barrichello having to take an unscheduled gearbox replacement after the Brazilian almost stalled on the grid in Belgium a few weeks back. Although the gearbox survived Monza, the team have opted to replace it now in Singapore and build the 5-grid slot penalty into their strategy.

With qualifying over with, we now have the grid for the 2009 Italian Grand Prix. Although the fuel loads are yet to be published by the FIA, it is clear (and has since been confirmed) that the Brawns are on a one-stop strategy, and therefore looking very good for the race. The only potential issue for the Brackley team are the KERS-enabled cars ahead of them. Adrian Sutil put in a stunning effort and came very close to his first pole position, but has to settle for P2 and Giancarlo Fisichella struggled, but importantly has performed better than his predecessor, Luca Badoer.

With qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix complete, we can see the grid in all its glory, albeit slightly strange and breaking from the usual run. On pole we have Giancarlo Fisichella, followed by fellow Italian Jarno Trulli. It is Force India’s maiden pole and the first for Fisichella in three years. Lining up third is Nick Heidfeld for BMW, ahead of Rubens Barrichello in the Brawn. Barrichello will need a good start tomorrow if he isn’t to get held up by three runners ahead of him, although if Giancarlo is on a light fuel load, and Trulli in P2 on merit, we could see a train a cars follow the Toyota pilot, allowing Fisichella to run away with the race. Furthermore, the weather likes to play at Spa Francorchamps, and precipitation could play a major part in tomorrow’s proceedings.

The grid has been decided for Sunday’s European Grand Prix, and after a fairly steady qualifying session, it is McLaren who will lead the pack away when the lights go out, Lewis Hamilton taking pole position ahead of team mate Heikki Kovalainen is second.Brawn did reasonably well with Rubens Barrichello finishing in third, although Jenson Button is a little disappointed to be starting in fifth, particularly as Sebastian Vettel is ahead in fourth.

Here is the grid for tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix, which will be updated should any penalties be handed out between now and the race start. At the front we have Fernando Alonso on pole, his first since 2007, but the Spaniard is already ruling out race victory. Right behind are the two Red Bulls who are surely the favourites, and then in P4 we have a KERS-equipped Lewis Hamilton who should be able to make up some places at the start. Felipe Massa is unlikely to make the start of the race following his accident in qualifying.

This grid goes out to Gavin, Pat, Lukeh, Duncan and Jackie, who each offered help when I said on Facebook I was trying to teach myself how to spell correctly and type quickly ‘Jaime Alguersuari’. Each had their own idea, and Lukeh suggested the Spaniard looks more like a Tim, which is obviously easier to say and write. So that is Jaime’s new nickname, as indicated on the grid.

Felipe Massa had qualified in tenth after getting through to Q3. However, Massa will not start the race tomorrow following his accident at the end of Q2 and therefore Ferrari will only be fielding one driver. All drivers have been moved up a slot.

Following qualifying, here is the completed grid for tomorrow’s German Grand Prix, this time being held around the Nurburgring circuit. With Mark Webber on pole, beating the pair of Brawn drivers and his team mate, the race should be exciting. Also attracting attention is Adrian Sutil in the Force India, recording his and the team’s highest ever starting position. Timo Glock has been demoted following his baulking of Fernando Alonso, and Seabastian Vettel got away with a fine and a reprimand after his team allowed him to pull out of the pitlane into the path of Kazuki Nakajima. Vettel has not been demoted on the grid in any way though.

For the first time this year, Jenson Button has failed to qualify in the top five, the Briton’s next worse result from qualifying this year being a P5 in Shanghai. However, all is not lost for the Brawn pilot and although fuel weights are not known yet, you cannot completely rule the championship leader out of a race victory. However, the Red Bull pair look very good for a dominating race tomorrow, with Sebastian Vettel on pole and Mark Webber looking handy in P3.

Following on from the last race’s grid post shoutout… this grid post goes to Tom McLoughlin and Andy Murphy from Edelman PR Agency, who keep trying to get me into Formula One events only for it to either go wrong at their end or at mine. Keep trying guys – I’m sure it will all come good at some point.

Turkey 2009: The Grid

With qualifying completed we now have the grid for tomorrow’s Turkish Grand Prix, held around the demanding Istanbul Park circuit. In the past, Felipe Massa has dominated, but with the shake-up to the general order this season, it is Sebastian Vettel who excited on Saturday and looks set to have a great race. Right behind the Red Bull pilot are both Brawn drivers, and with Jenson Button narrowly missing out on the pole, you cannot rule the Briton out. Rubens Barrichello also appeared to have a stellar lap in qualifying, although the car weights are yet to be published.

This grid post is dedicated to Alex Andronov from SofaF1, who when not contributing to his own group-run site, hosts the pre-race Parade Lap show at Sidepodcast on Sunday mornings prior to the grands prix. During my absence from posting during the Monaco event last time around, my grid post was apparently missed. So this one goes out to Alex and all who listen at Sidepodcast.

A great qualifying session has once again resulted in a Brawn driver at the front, and although Rubens Barrichello pushed hard during all three stages, it was Jenson Button who finally came out on top with a last gasp corker of a lap. Alongside the Briton is this season’s only other race winner so far, Sebastian Vettel, who will want to edge his RB5 ahead of the Brawn BGP 001 through the first corner. Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa make up the next row while Mark Webber and Timo Glock complete the third row.

After a great qualifying session earlier today, Jarno Trulli heads the pack as Toyota manage to lock-out the front row. Timo Glock has looked very racey this year and depending on fuel, the German will surely give his team mate a run for his money tomorrow afternoon. In third place the Shanghai winner rests, Sebastian Vettel eyeing up his second consecutive victory and once again looking to take points off Brawn who will line up on the grid in P4 and P6, Jenson Button getting the better of his team mate Rubens Barrichello.

With qualifying completed, we can now look at the completed grid for tomorrow’s Chinese Grand Prix. At the front we have a new face for this year; Sebastian Vettel taking the first non-Button pole of 2009 and the German’s career second. Confirming the pace of the Red Bull RB5 is team mate Mark Webber in third. Splitting the Milton Keynes team is surprisingly Fernando Alonso. The Brawns could do no better than fourth and fifth, with Rubens Barrichello out-qualifying Jenson button for the first time this year.

With qualifying completed, we now have the completed grid for tomorrow’s Malaysian Grand Prix. There are two penalties so far that have affected the order the cars will line up on the start/finish straight on Sunday, but Jenson Button’s pole is safe for now and the Briton will lead the pack when the lights go out at Sepang. Rubens Barrichello has been demoted five grid slots for changing his gear box out of sequence on Friday evening, and Sebastian Vettel has been sent back ten grid slots for failing to stop with a damaged car in Melbourne last weekend.

There have been a few penalties flying around since the end of qualifying earlier today, but currently this is how the grid stands. Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello of Brawn lock out the front row, with Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica close behind in the Red Bull and BMW respectively. Lewis Hamilton was given a five grid slot penalty after changing his gear box – the issue put him out of qualifying. Also receiving penalties were the Toyota team, the TF109 having a rear wing that was flexing too much. Trulli and Glock were sent to the back of the grid.

Ferrari and Red Bull Racing were also under investigation after Williams lodged a protest. However, after discussion the Oxfordshire team have withdrawn their protest. Should the grid change though before the start of tomorrow’s race, this post will be updated.

Australia 2009: Hamilton & Toyota Sent To Back, Ferrari & Red Bull May Follow

The first race of the season usually throws up some form of protest, or at minimum a bit of a sulk, but so far in Melbourne, the diffuser issue came to a head with no consequences as of yet and the Toyota drivers have been sent to the back of the grid. Williams have also protested the legality of the Ferrari and Red Bull Racing cars. The Toyota issue came about after a routine post-qualifying inspection of the cars, where it was discovered the rear wing mounts were in breach of the regulations.

It would seem that Toyota have breached the rule regarding flexibility in wings, and the rear wing on the TF109 has been or has the potential to move.

The Stewards have received a report from the Technical Delegate that the upper rear wing elements of cars No. 9 and 10 are showing extreme flexibility in contravention of Article 3.15 of the 2009 Formula One Technical Regulations.

The Stewards have heard the explanation from a representative of Panasonic Toyota Racing and have examined the cars in question.

The Stewards concur with the opinion of the Technical Delegate and find the cars contravene the requirements of Article 3.15 of the 2009 Formula One Technical Regulations.

It is the Stewards decision that cars number 9 and 10 be excluded from the Qualifying Session Official Classification. FIA Statement.

Article 3.15 of the Technical Regulations states:

With the exception of the cover described in Article 6.5.2 [the fuel connector cover] (when used in the pit lane), the driver adjustable bodywork described in Article 3.18 [permitted movable front wing element] and the [air] ducts described in Article 11.4, any specific part of the car influencing its aerodynamic performance:
– must comply with the rules relating to bodywork ;
– must be rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car (rigidly secured means not having any degree of freedom);
– must remain immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car.

Any device or construction that is designed to bridge the gap between the sprung part of the car and the ground is prohibited under all circumstances.

No part having an aerodynamic influence and no part of the bodywork, with the exception 3.13 above, may under any circumstances be located below the reference plane. FIA Technical Regulations – 18/03/2009.

In short, this means the rear wing is not allowed to move or flex in any way. According to the FIA, Toyota’s does. This puts Toyota at the back of the grid after qualifying well in P6 for Timo Glock and P8 for Jarno Trulli. At the moment, this promotes Felipe Massa to P6, Kimi Raikkonen to P7, Mark Webber to P8, Nick Heidfeld to P9, Fernando Alonso to P10 and similar along the grid.

However, the grid could change yet again because Williams have protested the legality of the Ferrari and Red Bull cars. This protest comes after Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault protested the legality of the Williams diffuser (along with Brawn’s and Toyota’s) yesterday. It is thought that Williams’s protest centres around some aerodynamic part of the F60 and RB5 cars.

And finally, Lewis Hamilton has also gone to the back of the grid after having to get a new gearbox fitted to his McLaren MP4-24. Originally qualifying in P15, Hamilton couldn’t take part in Q2 as his car lost all drive. The team had hoped it was something other than the gear box knowing the ensuing penalty would only make Hamilton’s Australian Grand Prix go from bad to worse. Unfortunately, it has done just that. According to the team, fourth gear was to blame.

Grid penalties are awarded to drivers in the order they were handed out, but it is unknown to me if Hamilton’s gearbox was changed before or after the FIA deemed the Toyota’s illegal. It more than likely was, and therefore Hamilton will start in P18 while Glock and Trulli take P19 and P20 respectively. Of course, Hamilton could end up starting higher than his original qualifying place if Ferrari and Red Bull promote him to P14.

Williams has now withdrawn it’s protest against Ferrari and Red Bull Racing.

With Felipe Massa on pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix, the 2008 World Championship showdown is going to be an electrifying race, especially the run down to the first corner on the first lap. Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton share the second row and Jarno Trulli is a little out of place, alongside Massa at the front. Whatever happens though, Formula One will be crowning a new world champion tomorrow. Here’s a quick run down of the grid, which will be updated should any penalties get handed out.

Lewis Hamilton took his sixth pole of 2008 and will lead the pack off the grid for tomorrow’s Japanese Grand Prix. This is Kimi Raikkonen’s first front row grid position since the French Grand Prix back in June. This is only the third time Kazuki Nakajima has out-qualified Nico Rosberg this year, the other times being Britain and Spain. It is the second time Scuderia Toro Rosso have got both drivers into the top-ten, and Nick Heidfeld has equalled his worse qualifying position of the season, sixteenth having been previously claimed by the BMW driver in Hungary.

The grid has been decided for the very first Singapore Grand Prix, and Felipe Massa is on the top spot, followed by Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and Robert Kubica. BMW team mate Nick Heidfeld has received a three-grid place penalty following an altercation with Rubens Barrichello, where the Honda driver was impeded and then struggled to abort the lap and enter the pitlane. Formula One’s first night race is looking to be a great race.

With Lewis Hamilton back in fifteenth and Kimi Raikkonen just ahead in fourteenth, tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix is going to be belter, especially if the weather continues to throw up a few surprises. Felipe Massa qualified sixth, but engineer Rob Smedley has hinted at the Brazilian being on a heavy fuel strategy. Heikki Kovalainen has the best chance out of everyone, starting in second and in a McLaren, but Sebastian Vettel on pole position will want to remain there for as long as he can.

The McLarens line up on the Spa Francorchamps grid one directly in front of the other, as do the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. Lewis Hamilton claimed the pole position by some margin, while Heikki Kovalainen displaced Raikkonen with his last gasp attempt in Q3. Felipe Massa splits the McLarens while Kimi rests in fourth, once again. Both Scuderia Toro Rossos completed the top ten and Fernando Alonso will be looking for a decent points finish as he slides in behind Nick Heidfeld, settling for fifth and sixth respectively.

By far the most interesting part of qualifying was the electric pace of the two Scuderia Toro Rossos. To go significantly faster than their parent team, STR have embarrassed Red Bull Racing, who languish in fourteenth and seveneenth. Felipe Massa looks strong for a good race and Lewis Hamilton will be hungry after his Hungarian perofrmance. Heikki Kovalainen and Kimi Raikkonen look set to take up supporting roles, but the Finns cannot be ruled out entirely as Valencia stages it’s first grand prix on the new urban circuit.

McLaren look very strong on the front row of the Hungaroring grid. The pair of MP4-23 drivers appear to be hooked-up with the Hungarian circuit and the car is doing a good job on the tight and twisty corners. Ferrari have a lot of work do, especially as Kimi Raikkonen is back in sixth. Between himself and his team mate in third are Robert Kubica and Timo Glock. And just behind the Finn are Fernando Alonso – who has looked relatively pacey all weekend – and Mark Webber and Jarno Trulli, both in reasonably competitive cars.

Here’s what the grid for tomorrow’s British Grand Prix will look like. Currently there are no penalties that I know of so therefore no demotions as of yet. If anything does happen I will update the grid accordingly. It looks very interesting with Kovalainen on pole for the first time and Mark Webber hoping for some serious points. Hamilton and Raikkonen will no doubt duke it out and try to use their strategies to get ahead of the Red Bull, but unfortunately for Ferrari, Massa is way down in seventh.

Sebastian Vettel looks good providing he can keep out of trouble at the start tomorrow and both Renault’s are in the top ten and looking reasonable. Toyota are lacking performance at Silverstone and the BMWs don’t look al that fast either. Although Nick Heidfeld does tend to race better than qualify, but Robert Kubica is way back in tenth after a problem in qualfying put him out of contention.

The French Grand Prix grid is looking a little confusing right now, so I thought I’d attempt to clarify a few things as best I can. In Canada both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton received ten grid slot penalties for their incidents in the pit lane. The penalty was a ten grid-slot demotion each, which means that Hamilton who qualified in third will actually start in thirteenth. Rosberg, who got the same penalty for doing pretty much the same thing in Montreal, qualified fifteenth so he goes to the back of the grid. Heikki Kovalainen received a five grid-slot penalty for impeding Mark Webber during qualifying, so he goes from sixth, to fifth (penalties are applied in order of achievement) and finally to tenth.
