The Canadian Grand Prix has been treading on thin ice for a little over a month now after the event was unceremoniously dropped from the proposed 2009 calendar without warning and at the time, little explanation. Since then, government and circuit officials from Canada have held talks with Bernie Ecclestone in the hope the race can be reinstated. I think we are on provisional calendar number three at the moment, and while it is good for the sport to get such an important part of the Formula One World Championship correct, it is annoying me that I can’t book my summer holiday yet. And on a slightly more serious note, the Chinese Grand Prix has moved and there is still no return of Canada to the calendar, suggesting that there has been no further development between the Canadian officials and Bernie Ecclestone. After much speculation all season that German driver Nick Heidfeld may be dropped from the race-winning BMW team, Mario Theissen announced on Monday that his driver line-up would remain unchanged for the 2009 campaign. The news puts an end to the rumour of Fernando Alonso joining the squad, and confirms Theissen’s faith in his loyal pilots. Williams announced a couple of days ago that their driver line-up for 2009 will remain unchanged. This means that the FW31 will be piloted by the Australian and Singapore podium-placed driver Nico Rosberg, and Toyota-backed Japanese star Kazuki Nakajima. While the Oxfordshire-based team are in praise of Rosberg and his two fantastic podiums, it is worth mentioning that Nakajima, although perhaps anonymously, has driven surprisingly well this year. The FIA, after holding discussions in France on a variety of Formula One-related topics, have released a provisional calender for the 2009 Formula One World Championship. The calendar, which may change prior to next March, includes Magny Cours as the host of the French Grand Prix (and the FFSA confirmed this separately), but does not have the US Grand Prix listed.
