  • Monaco 2008: Qualifying Result

Felipe Massa has taken pole position for tomorrow’s Monaco Grand Prix with a last-gasp fast lap. In a thrilling session that saw quick laps from a variety of drivers, it was Ferrari who came away on top with Kimi Raikkonen taking the over front-row slot next to his team mate. McLaren lost out to the Scuderia with Lewis Hamilton in third and Heikki Kovalainen in fourth. BMW only had one driver in Q3 has Nick Heidfeld lost out earlier in Q2, but Robert Kubica managed fifth ahead of Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso.

Full report will be published soon.

    13. Nick Heidfeld BMW 1m16.455s Q2
    14. Kazuki Nakajima Williams 1m16.479s Q2
    *15. Rubens Barrichello Honda 1m16.537s Q2
    16. Sebastien Bourdais Scuderia Toro Rosso 1m16.806s Q1
    17. Nelson Piquet Jr. Renault 1m16.933s Q1
**18. Sebastian Vettel Scuderia Toro Rosso 1m16.955s Q1
    19. Adrian Sutil Force India 1m17.225s Q1
    ***20. Giancarlo Fisichella Force India 1m17.823s Q1

*Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella are under investigation from an incident from Q1. Currently little news is available on what the incident is if there will be any further penalties. Update: No penalty given to either driver. Apparently, Barrichello may have held Fisichella up, but the stewards decided it wasn’t a punishable offense.
**Sebastian Vettel has been given a five grid-place penalty for having his gearbox replaced before he is allowed. Read this post for more information. Because Vettel’s gearbox was changed first, his penalty is applied first.
***Giancarlo Fisichella has been given a five grid-place penalty for having his gearbox replaced before he is allowed. Because Fisichella’s gearbox was changed after Vettel’s, his penalty is applied after Vettel’s.

Therefore, the bottom of the grid looks like this (I think):

    17. Nelson Piquet Jr. Renault 1m16.933s Q1
    18. Adrian Sutil Force India 1m17.225s Q1
    19. Sebastian Vettel Scuderia Toro Rosso 1m16.955s Q1
    20. Giancarlo Fisichella Force India 1m17.823s Q1
