Tony Teixeira Is Sending Out The Wrong Message

Posted on April 30th, 2008 by Oliver White

I’ve just read this article on Autosport, which in essence is about India’s participation in motor sport, primarily Formula One and A1GP, for which Tony Teixeira is the chairman of. Teixeira talks about Narain Karthikeyan, so-called the fastest Indian in the world, and his success in the A1GP series. Karthikeyan has raced in Formula One before with Jordan, but due to the instability in the team and the eventual changing of hands to the Midland group, Narain didn’t get another chance to show his worth in the sport. But racing with the Indian A1GP team, Karthikeyan has given the country it’s first win in the series and continues to promote the sport in his home country. And it is promotion that Teixeira feels Formula One team Force India are getting wrong. Continue Reading…

Kovalainen Pays Tribute To Strong Car & Attentive Staff

Posted on April 28th, 2008 by Oliver White

Heikki Kovalainen is expected to leave hospital this evening, having undergone tests to ensure he hasn’t suffered any head injuries or bone damage. Although the Finnish driver was briefly knocked unconscious following his impact with tyre barrier at Circuit de Catalunya, he has said to be in high spirits and is looking forward to a quick recovery in time for the Turkish Grand Prix on May 11th. Heikki will have to pass a mandatory test prior to being allowed to race in Istanbul, but the team are confident their driver will be perfectly fine to continue competing in a fortnight. News Round-up: Heikki, Sydney & A Great Line From Coulthard

Posted on April 28th, 2008 by Oliver White

A few stories have emerged this Monday morning, but the most important one surrounds Heikki Kovalainen, who has spent the night in hospital, but is absolutely fine. Also making headlines today are Australia, who are contemplating the future of Formula One in their country. And I’ll finish off this quick round-up with a humorous line from David Coulthard, uttered to the media after his incident with Timo Glock in yesterday’s Spanish Grand Prix. Continue Reading…

BlogF1 On La Canta Magnifico

Posted on April 28th, 2008 by Oliver White

This fine Monday morning was made even more welcoming by my contribution to Alianora La Canta’s guest-post series going up on La Canta Magnifico. Entitled Visions of the Future, Ali certainly got my imagination going; flying cars, unheard-of technology, black and white rules that are evenly and fairly enforced, supreme safety while still providing an incredible spectacle, the perfect balance of chasing, overtaking and failing to pass…

…and then I realised that this is Formula One we’re talking about, so I slumped back in my chair and attempted to give some thoughts on the future of the sport with both feet on the ground. Continue Reading…

Spain 2008: Kimi Extends While McLaren & BMW Falter

Posted on April 27th, 2008 by Oliver White

It was a glorious day for Ferrari as Kimi Raikkonen led a one-two on the final lap of the Spanish Grand Prix, but rivals McLaren and BMW had a poor end to their weekend, McLaren only collecting six points and BMW five. Fernando Alonso eventually retired, his Renault engine letting go at the most inopportune moment. The Circuit de Catalunya also saw a fair few other retirements as well, with only thirteen cars managing to get tot he finish line on lap 66. The most noted of retirements being Heikki Kovalainen, who hit the tyre barrier at T8 at around 140mph. Thankfully, the Finn appears to be fine, just a little concussed and sore. Continue Reading…

Spain 2008: Race Result

Posted on April 27th, 2008 by Oliver White

Kimi Raikkonen has led home a one-two finish for Ferrari. In what was an eventful race for Barcelona, the grand prix was ultimately a little dull in comparison to others on the calendar. However, Raikkonen now extends his lead in the drivers championship, and Massa collected a much needed eight points from second. Unfortunately Fernando Alonso was forced to pull his Renault over to the side of the circuit, his engine suffering a rare failure. Lewis Hamilton collected third but all eyes were on his team mate, Heikki Kovalainen, who was flown to hospital after a high-speed accident. So far, it appears as though Heikki is fine. Heikki Kovalainen Suffers High-Speed Incident

Posted on April 27th, 2008 by Oliver White

On lap 22 McLaren driver Heikki Kovalainen appeared to suffer some kind of failure on his MP4-23. At turn 8 his car started to turn into the right-hander, but then straightened up and shot over the gravel and contacted the tyre-barrier. The impact speed looked high (140mph according to ITV) and Kovalainen did not immediately jump out of the McLaren. Continue Reading…

Have Renault Improved, Or Was Is It For The Fans?

Posted on April 26th, 2008 by Oliver White

The qualifying session for the 2008 Spanish Grand Prix threw up a couple of surprises, but I think all the talking points have centred around one driver - Fernando Alonso. The double world champion was able to place his Renault R28 on provisional pole position with his final lap of the day. Unfortunately to the euphoric crowds who stood, cheered and applauded their hero, Kimi Raikkonen followed Alonso over the line with a pole-stealing lap. The Finnish driver simply had a faster car on the day. However, while many expect Alonso is light on fuel, we need to consider Nelson Piquet Jr’s lap as well, the Brazilian managing to get in to tenth. Continue Reading…

Spain 2008: Qualifying Report

Posted on April 26th, 2008 by Oliver White

Kimi Raikkonen may have claimed his first pole position of the year, but all the talk in the Spanish paddock is of local hero Fernando Alonso. The double world champion has been enduring a tough year so far in the under-performing Renault R28, but in front of his adoring home crowds, Alonso slapped his car on provisional pole for a few moments, before Raikkonen demoted him to second where he remained. With the fans erupting in joy and applauding Fernando, his position may not last all that long in tomorrow’s race. Speaking to ITV after the session, Pat Symonds stated that it is clear Alonso and his team mate are not on the same strategy. Continue Reading…
