Id on't think Piquet will beat Alonso over the season but given that Piquet is an ackonowledged qualifying expert and Alonso hates to be beaten even in free pracatise there will be fireworks.

Piquet turned up at a pre-season karting event wearing a tee shirt which had a cartoon on the back of it of him urinating in the cars of Raikkonane and Hamilton. He is not going to respect Alonso's position. He thinks he is as good as Hamilton and knows that he has to beat Alonso to prove it.

If he at any point in the season gets the upper hand you know his father is going to stir up the politics and get in Flavio's hair. Bear in mind that Nelson drove for Bernie for years and if he thinks his boy is being held back by the team he will be rattling Bernie's cage.

In addition Piquet is in the team at the behest of Carlos Slim Helu so is not exactly in a vulnerable position.

If Piquet turns out to be faster than Alonso where does that leave Fernando. At the start of last season the smart money said he was going to be the number one driver in the sport. At the end of this season he will have been driven out of McLaren by Hamilton, dodged Kovalainen and beaten by Piquet. Fernando simply has to beat Piquet this year or his reputation and market value is shot.

I have a horrible feeling there will be a fight at the end of the season. Both Alonso and Piquet Jr hate to lose and are capable of destabilising a team if they don't get the upper hand. Fortunately for Alonso, I think he'll defeat Piquet Jr based on the times. Luckily Renault are strong enough to put up with a few sulks (they've had practise over the years, with a variety of drivers...)

I mentioned this yesterday and, for me, it's probably the most intriguing element of the season to consider as we wait with bated breath for it to start. I believe the pair will get on well throughout the season as I don't see Piquet jnr having the same impact Hamilton did last year. Here's hoping another Alonso feud doesn't overshadow the F1 season this time around and instead Piquet can learn from him and develop in his debut year.
