Milos - that, and parts of Sepang are slowly sinking because it was built on a swamp. Not that Bernie will have noticed this small problem...

The whole "night race" thing is frustrating partly because I like the unique ambience of me having to get up at all hours to watch the series (less committed viewers can always catch a re-run) and partly because it is obvious this measure is just a cynical ploy to get more money from the TV companies and circuits. Besides, knowing ITV, making the race be broadcast at 7pm will merely lead to us having to stay up until midnight for the initial broadcast anyway, since Coronation Street and Dancing on Ice are considered more important.

@Eric: I had considered the issues night races might cause to attendees of the event, but hadn't thought about the insects. Going to races is uncomfortable enough; crowds, plastic seats, open to the weather etc... Fair point about fans living in North America and Asia who have to wake up early to see the European races. I guess you can't please everyone!

@Milos: I too thought Bernie's comments on Sepang were a little uncalled for. I've never visited the track, but it is only a handful of years old (8) and really cannot be too shabby yet. I think you're right about Ecclestone's pockets, they were negotiating a new deal at the time.

further note on the Malaysian venue - I think Bernie's talk about venue looking tired was more about getting more out of Malaysia to his pocket than about the facilities ... OK, I haven't seen the Paddock areas, but the areas accessible to public are no more "tired" than the pretty much brand new Shanghai track. Nothing wrong with Sepang (yet) except for Ecclestone's greed ...

i went to Malaysia for the race for the past 3 years . KL is a great place to be during the F1 weekend, lots of party lots of fun ... But night race on Sunday will kill the parties in the city on Sunday night ... The distance from track to city and the heavy traffic will make it impossible to get to KL before Monday morning ... Pls forget the night race or I will never go back for the Malaysian GP :-)

Ha! I think all European races should be held at night, so us Canadians don't have to wake up at some ungodly hour! :D

Seriously though, I'm not so sure I would want to attend a night race in one of those countries. Imagine all the insects those floodlights would attract.
