As the teams descend on the Turkish circuit at Istanbul, Kimi Raikkonen laid down the gauntlet during the first free practice of the Grand Prix weekend. Setting a time of 1m27.988s, the Finn managed to pip his team mate Felipe Massa by 0.4s, who leads the McLaren duo by 0.8s. The significant margin between Ferrari and McLaren confirms the progress the Scuderia have made over the three week break, and already it seems that while Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton may have made up, they have a difficult weekend ahead of them. The brief lowdown on events over the past week, including David Coulthard’s surprise admission, advancements in Prodrive’s 2008 setup, BMWs driver lineup for next year and because I was away when it all happened, Toro Rosso’s inclusion of a Champion in their stable. Things are starting to take shape for the 2008 season, and these announcements only add to the already building excitement for another year of racing. Continue Reading…

It seems Formula One bosses like to kick a ball around when they’re not running the multi-million dollar business of motor racing. F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has admitted to wanting to own London-based football club Arsenal, and now Renault boss Flavio Briatore is set to become the new owner of Queens Park Rangers, a second division club based in Shepherds Bush in West London. September will be a crucial month for the McLaren team, both on and off the track. Three races are scheduled for this month (Italy, Belgium and China) and with the strained relationship between the drivers, the action could be interesting to watch and the results potentially sealing the title race one way or another. But aside from the actual event of racing, McLaren will also be spending a couple of days in Paris standing before the International Court of Appeal. On the 19th, the team will hear the result of their appeal against the penalties imposed in Hungary, and six days prior on the 13th, Mike Coughlan will hear the verdict that could see the Brit banned from international motorsport for many years. Apparently a lot happened while I was away, and despite pre-publishing a few little posts, it seems as though the big news relating to McLaren (again) dominated the headlines. It is starting to seem as though 2007 will be remembered for all the controversy, inter-team battles and illegal movements of paperwork, wings and floors. But to gently get me back into the swing of things, I’ll just pretend the last two weeks didn’t happen until something next occurs in the saga that deserves a write up. For now at least, let’s talk about Mid-Jorker. Continue Reading…

Do you support any one driver or team, any particular nationality, or do you watch Formula One for other reasons? This question often makes me think, because I don’t believe I really do support a driver. Nor do I support any particular team. I have often tried, especially so since starting to write BlogF1. I find that driver fan sites are very interesting to read because the passion of the author really shines through in their writing, and I often think that this is sometimes lacking in me. Eleven races into the 2007 Formula One World Championship, and we’ve seen some superb driving, overtaking, stints and flourishes as the 22 drivers vie for victory. Aside from the Hungarian Grand Prix (the result of which I do not know at the time of writing this), we have only seen four winners, but I think it is fair to say the level of performances this year has been pretty high. Lewis Hamilton has become an expert at starting, Fernando Alonso still has his daredevil overtaking streak, and Kimi Raikkonen can still put in some awesome laptimes when he needs to. And of course, it is always a pleasure to see Felipe Massa jumping around the podium - I don’t think anyone has ever looked happier to win a race. Continue Reading…
