  • Hamilton Taken To Hospital For Checks

Lewis Hamilton - 2007 US Grand PrixLewis Hamilton has been airlifted from the Nurburging medical centre in Germany to a local hospital for further checks following his pretty heavy accident earlier today in qualifying. Lewis pounded a tyre barrier at a reported 250kph after a problem occurred with his front right wheel. Anthony Hamilton, Lewis’s father, followed his son to nearby Koblenz Bundeswehr Hospital where further tests and CT scans are being done to ascertain whether Lewis will be able to race tomorrow.

I’m absolutely fine and we will see later if I am able to race tomorrow. Everybody has been looking after me really well. We know what caused the accident and I’m just pleased that everything is OK and I really hope I can race tomorrow. Lewis Hamilton.

Ron Dennis. McLaren team boss, has also spoken of his understanding of the accident.

The most concerning thing was that we couldn’t speak to him. It took us 30 to 45 seconds to realise that the radio had failed in the impact. In that period there was of course no dialogue and you don’t get the reassurance of the driver saying ‘I’m ok’. The camera position showed him exercising his legs was quite alarming. We didn’t know whether he was doing that as a result of pain or some other problem. It was only once I got to the medical centre that I had any understanding how he was. I would be surprised if he was not able to race. Ron Dennis.
