Initial Thoughts: Who’s Up and Who’s Down?

Posted on March 16th, 2007 by Oliver White

Just some initial thoughts based on the free practices earlier in comparison to last year’s end-of-season pace. I realise that the track conditions probably didn’t give the true comparitive speed of each car, so just take these as a few meandering thoughts.

Up for it: Ferrari, McLaren
Up: BMW, Williams, Red Bull, Super Aguri
Down: Toro Rosso
Down and out: Toyota
Undecided: Renault, Honda, Spyker

Renault will eventually be up, as will Honda to a lesser degree. Spyker surprised me, Toro Rosso didn’t. Comment away should you wish.

Australia: Practice Sessions

Posted on March 16th, 2007 by Oliver White

Lewis Hamilton Debuts In AustraliaReigning World Champion Fernando Alonso showed no signs of relenting his pressure on his colleagues today as free practice started at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, Australia. Alonso took the top of the timing sheets in the first session, pipping rival Felipe Massa by a large margin. However, it should be noted that the circuit was damp in the morning, and Alonso managed to pop in a quick one before the end of the session on the ever dryng track. BMWs Sebastian Vettel subbed for Robert Kubica initially and managed to set the third quickest lap. Continue Reading…

F1 2007: Circuits & Calendar

Posted on March 16th, 2007 by Oliver White

2007 Hungarian Grand PrixThis post is a little late - my apologies for that - I chose to take a couple of days off from blogging before the season began and pre-published this article, but I messed up the dates and it didn’t go up when it was supposed to, my bad. But without any furthur ado, here is the Formula One 2007 calendar.

With the 2007 season just starting in Australia, a post dedicated to the circuits the teams will be flying around this year is in order. With seventeen races for 2007, the Formula One season is reduced by one Grand Prix over last year with the omission of San Marino along with the change in Japan and Germany and the re-inclusion of Spa Francorchamps. F1 2007: Rules & Regulations

Posted on March 13th, 2007 by Oliver White

Click to see all F1 2007 Build Up postsThe rules and regulations pertaining to Formula One racing are fairly in-depth. The FIA release the rules to the public via their website, and just a quick scan of the PDF documents is enough to make anyone feel a little drowsy. However, the rules are important because it is these limitations that guide the sport and keep it fair for all competitors, even though some regulations seem to make the sport a little unfair for its viewers. This post will make an attempt at deciphering some of these rules, in particular the changes made for the 2007 season, due to kick off this coming weekend. Continue Reading…

What If Williams Beat Toyota, and Aguri Beat Honda?

Posted on March 13th, 2007 by Oliver White

Anthony Davidson Heads Into His Debut Season With Super AguriIt’s not inconceivable for the above situation to occur, especially given the winter testing times of each respective team. Toyota have been miserable for most of the off-season, and the reasons are understandable as once again, they appear to be entering another year of mis-fortune and uncompetitiveness. On the other side of the coin, Toyota-powered Williams have enjoyed a more buoyant winter, which saw Nico Rosberg and Alex Wurz ride high in the timing sheets on more than one occasion. In fact, in BlogF1’s 2007 season previews, Williams are predicted to finish higher in the constructors than Toyota - a team with a considerably larger budget. Continue Reading…

Mixed Signals From Renault

Posted on March 13th, 2007 by Oliver White

Flavio and Pat Talk Shop In 2006In preparation for their title defence, Renault have been speaking to the press about their competitiveness, inconsistent winter testing and the pressures facing the Anglo-French squad as they challenge for another championship in the new post-Alonso era. In an interview, Giancarlo Fisichella said that he would be hoping to gain as many points as possible in the early part of the season, and if possible, challenge for race wins. His language doesn’t seem too optimistic, but it does contradict the words of technical director Pat Symonds. Continue Reading…

Trulli Fever Hits High

Posted on March 13th, 2007 by Oliver White

Jarno Trulli Comes Down With FeverWith just three days to go before the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix and 2007 season opener, Toyota driver Jarno Trulli has come down with a fever. Jarno was forced miss a planned stop over in Japan for a media conference in front of his teams home journalists while en route to Melbourne, and Jarno is expected to rest before the Grand Prix meeting commences. Trulli had left for Australia with renewed optismism in his Toyota after winter testing showed the new TF107 to be off the pace of its rivals. However, this news will surely put Trulli on the back foot for the weekends race, adding further pressure on Toyota to sort out the team that looks so promising, but fails to deliver time and time again. F1 2007: Renault

Posted on March 12th, 2007 by Oliver White

Click to see all F1 2007 Build Up postsWorld Champions Renault will enter the 2007 season without their star driver Fernando Alonso, who announced his defection to McLaren late in 2005. However, the team do carry with them two years of winning races and titles, and while the change in drivers will knock the team temporarily, if the car is good there is little reason why Anglo-French squad cannot continue to win.
