Google Earth Images

Google Earth Racing Tracks - EuropeAs some of you are probably aware, I’m currently attempting to list as many circuits as possible on the Circuits & Calendars page. This is quite a daunting task as I not only want to capture a decent image, but also include some information on the circuits. This information is sometimes quite hard to come by, especially if the circuit is old and no longer in use. Continue Reading…

Spyker Seal Ferrari Engine Deal For 2007

Posted on September 30th, 2006 by Oliver White

Kolles and Todt Sign To Share Ferrari EnginesSpyker - new owners of Midland F1 - have cemented a deal to run Ferrari V8’s next year in a bid to improve their competitiveness and move off the back of the grid. The team have also re-sign Dutch driver Christijan Albers as expected, leaving one seat left which is currently being hunted by Tiago Monteiro, Robert Doornbos and Christian Klien. It is rumoured that Spyker are looking for 5 million for the drive next year, but if it was based solely on previous performances, I cannot see how Tiago would lose out. The Portugese driver has often put in some electrifying performances and often put his Joran/Midland where it shouldn’t be. However, Spyker’s Dutch owners will probably by vying for a Dutch driver, which will boost Doornbos’ chances, and Spyker will be looking for money - and who know’s which one that will favour!

FIA/AMD Formula One Survey: Results

Posted on September 27th, 2006 by Oliver White

Max Mosley - FIA ChiefClick here to be taken to the FIA website, where they have published the results of their survey which was conducted earlier this year.

Ferrari is currently the fans favourite team, hording 30% of votes. McLaren took 21% and Renault and Williams tied for third. Michael Schumacher was the fans favourtite driver on 28%, Kimi Raikkonen was second with 17% and Jenson Button managed 8% of the votes. 64% of voters registered a 10 year plus relationship with Formula One, while only 1% ststed this was the first year they had followed the sport. This doesn’t exactly bode well for the future of the sport, but it may be that new fans may not bother to complete a fairly lengthy survey based on less than a years knowledge and following of F1.

Germany To Split Grand Prix

Posted on September 27th, 2006 by Oliver White

The German Grand Prix will be split between its two major circuits - Hockenheim and Nurburgring - it was announced today. Hockenheim will host the race in 2008 and 2010, and Nurburburgring will stage the 2007 and 2009 Grands Prix.

This announcement came after much speculation arose after the FIA released the provisional calendar somewhat earlier than usual. Most people think this move was made to apply pressure to some circuits that were ommitted to make the necessary updates to bring their facilities up to current standards.

The German Grand Prix came under threat last year when it was realised that Hockenheim was facing financial difficulties. It was anounced almost strauight away that the two circuits could share the race, thus halving the costs essentially, but it does mean the European Grand Prix will be sacrificed, as per the 2007 Provisional Calendar.

Spyker Unveils New Livery

Posted on September 19th, 2006 by Oliver White

Spyker MF1 - New LiverySince the Dutch motor company Spyker bought the Midland Formula One team ten days ago with Michel Mol from Lost Boys, they have been busily rebranding the team and introducing new sponsors to the world of F1. And at Silverstone today, the team rolled out of the garage with their striking new colours, reminiscent of the Orange Arrows days.

Spyker are racing in the traditional sporting colours of The Netherlands - Orange. The football team wear orange, and the A1 cars run in a similar shade. The cars also have new sponsors from the online world, no doubt brought in by co-owner Michel Mol, who has made his millions with the internet. Continue Reading…

Centreline Downwash Generating Wing Delayed Until 2009

Posted on September 18th, 2006 by Oliver White

Proposed CDG WingAfter a meeting today in Paris between the teams and the FIA, it was decided that a raft of aerodynamic changes (due to come in to force in 2008) would now be delayed until 2009.

Late last year, the FIA proposed changing the rear wing on Formula One cars to reduce turbulence and help drivers get closer to one another, thus encorouging overtaking. This wing (known as Centreline Downwash Generating Wing, or CDG) - which is split in the middle and sort of hovers behind each rear wheel - has caused some controversy among F1 employees as it seemed that the FIA had done very little testing or research into the effects and therefore its effectiveness. San Marino May Return To Calendar

Posted on September 18th, 2006 by Oliver White

Imola Circuit - Google Earth ImageThe Formula One San Marino Grand Prix - held at the Imola circuit - may return next year after team bosses unanimously agreed to have 18 races next year. When the FIA released their provisional calendar for the 2007 season, San Marino was omitted, and suspicions arose when it was thought that Sagis (the circuit owners) may have been delayed in making modifications and improvments needed to bring the circuit up to current high standards. It was thought that Bernie Ecclestone was leaving the Grand Prix off the calendar for now to apply a little pressure on the circuit owners to speed up with the building work.

Renault To Work With Red Bull

Posted on September 16th, 2006 by Oliver White

Renault Engine CoverRenault have confirmed that they will be working with Red Bull next year, supplying engines to one of the energy drinks teams. Although neither company is willing to confirm which team the engines will power for 2007, Red Bull are looking good with Ferrari also under contract for next year.

Recently, Red Bull have been trying to pass their current Ferrari contract to sister team Toro Rosso. This would make way for the all-conquering Renault unit for the senior Red Bull Racing team. This is something new aerodynamicist Adrian Newey is particularly fond of, having won many races and titles with the French engine manufacturer. However, it has been reported that Ferrari are less than keen to move their engine to a different team, claiming that although they are working with Red Bull, the engines they supply are for Red Bull Racing alone.

The Red Bulletin Goes Online

Posted on September 13th, 2006 by Oliver White

Christian Klien Catches Up With The Red BulletinRed Bull took it upon themselves this year to produce a short magazine that was distributed among the paddock and spectators at each Grand Prix. Designed to be a simple break for Formula One workers and grandstand ticket holders, the magazine included short articles and quizzes to help pass time. Following the success of this little venture, Red Bull now intend to launch the publication online next year and are starting to publicise the website where pre-registrations are being accepted.

Currently, the website offers no pricing details, but it does not state that it will be free either. Click here to be taken to the Red Bulletin’s website, where you can take a glance at the Italian Grand Prix editions as well as all of the back issues.
