Kubica Disqualified For Being Underweight

Posted on August 6th, 2006 by Oliver White

Robert Kubica has been disqualified - 2006 Hungarian Grand PrixRobert Kubica - who drove a blistering debut in Hungary earlier - has been disqualified from his seventh place finish after stewards found his BMW Sauber to be 2kg underweight. The news comes as a bitter blow to the Pole who had driven so well all weekend after being promoted in Jacques Villeneuve’s absence.

The error in weight has been attributed to excessive tyre wear caused by the teams having to run on intermediates as opposed to the well-rehearsed runs on dry/grooved tyres.

Button Finally Wins For Honda

Posted on August 6th, 2006 by Oliver White

Jenson Button Wins - 2006 Hungarian Grand PrixThe Hungarian Grand Prix has been won by Jenson Button, after a sensational wet race that saw great drives and great errors.

From the start, the circuit in Budapest was going to produce an excellent race after Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso started back in 11th and 15th respectively following penalties imposed for passing under red and yellow flags and dangerous driving in practice sessions. But no one could have written a script for the 2006 Grand Prix, which saw spins from Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen rear-ending Vitantonio Liuzzi and Fernando Alonso suffering a driveshaft failure forcing the Spaniard to retire from the lead.

Raikkonen Takes Pole In Hectic Qualifying

Posted on August 5th, 2006 by Oliver White

Robert Kubica - 2006 Australian Grand PrixKimi Raikkonen took pole position at the Hungaroring from Felipe Massa, Rubens Barrichello, and Pedro de la Rosa. In a session that saw penalties given to seven times champion Michael Schumacher and current reigning champ Fernando Alonso, all eyes were on Ferrari and Renault number twos to pick up the pieces.

Initially, Massa set some stunning laps and really impressed keeping his scarlet car up at the top of the time sheets. Giancarlo Fisichella didn’t fair as well though, only managing seventh in the final standings. But one young man that stood out from the rest was Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber. Standing in for ‘injured’ Jacques Villeneuve, he beat his experienced team mate Nick Heidfeld in each session, crucially getting himself into the final 10 ahead of the German. Robert - the first Pole in F1 - finally ended up ninth, and after Jenson Button was demoted for his engine change, Heidfeld was promoted to tenth. A stunning performance from the 22 year old, and Robert is for sure going to be in Formula One for a good long while - bad news for the 1997 world champion.

Okay, so we have all filled in the FIA/AMD F1 Survey and voiced our opinion on Formula One. And those of us who have ignored it realise that fans play no part in the global economy of F1. Well, at least to the extent of multi-billionaire Ecclestone etc…

… But what do we - the fans who keep the sport alive - think of the new ‘tweaked’ qualifying system?

Williams Opt For Wurz Over Webber

Posted on August 2nd, 2006 by Oliver White

Alex Wurz tussles with Michael Schumacher - Monaco 1998Seemingly not content with Renault, BMW, Ferrari and McLaren hogging the limelight with regards to driver changes for 2006 and 2007, Williams have announced that Mark Webber’s services will not be retained for next year. Instead, Sir Frank Williams has opted to promote test driver Alex Wurz to a full race seat, which will see the Austrian return to competitive driving after a long spell as tester for McLaren and Team Willy.
