Alonso Takes British Victory

Posted on June 11th, 2006 by Oliver White

Jenson Button at the British F1 Grand PrixFernando Alonso has comfortably driven his Renault to victory at Silverstone, leading home Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen. In what was a fairly uneventful race, Alonso has extended his championship points tally to 74, 23 clear of his nearest rival Schumacher.

The start of the race saw an incident involving Scott Speed, Ralf Schumacher and Mark Webber, which eventually forced all three to retire. The incident started with Scott getting a reasonable start in his V10-restricted Toro Rosso, and he managed to draw along side the Toyota of Schumacher. In an attempt to pass around the outside, the two cars made contact and Ralf’sToyota was pitched into the Williams of Webber, who had nowhere to go.

Alonso Takes British Pole

Posted on June 10th, 2006 by Oliver White

Fernando Alonso takes British PoleFernando Alonso has snatched pole position at Silverstone from Kimi Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher in the last seconds of the session. Michael set a good early time, but the young Spaniard nailed a glorious lap that took the number one spot away from the 7 times champion by four tenths of a second. Next, Kimi Raikkonen - who started his lap with only a handful of seconds on the clock - pipped Schumacher and demoted the German to third.

However, the drama began in the very first knockout period where British hopeful Jenson Button failed to make it through after being called into the weigh-bridge. The cars are called in randomly for a spot check, and unfortunately for Jenson, this hampered his qualifying attempts. Whilst various Formula One commentators suggested that Honda still had time for another lap, Gil de Ferran stated that there just wasn’t enough left.

Silverstone: A Bit Of History

Posted on June 8th, 2006 by Oliver White

Silverstone first hosted the British Grand Prix in 1948, and in 1950 when the Formula One Championship was organised, the British racing circuit hosted the first race of the year.

The circuit – which is located in Northamptonshire – was originally a WWII airfield, parts of which remain to this day. It is often said that on race day, Silverstone becomes the busiest airfield in the UK!

The British Grand Prix has been held at other circuits around the country, most notably at Aintree and Brands Hatch. However, since 1987, Silverstone has exclusively hosted the race while Donington Park got a European Grand Prix in 1993.

Silverstone: The Build Up

Posted on June 7th, 2006 by Oliver White

Silverstone F1 CircuitIt’s that time of year again, time for Pimms, strawberries and the British Grand Prix. Well actually, it isn’t! The British round of the Formula One Championship is a little ahead of schedule this year in order for the big event to not clash with some kind of footie competition or something.
Personally, I don’t get why the kick-about in Germany wasn’t moved? But hey, that’s life.

So the race is a little earlier this year, and there were fears initially that people wouldn’t know. This might obviously lead to a shortfall in ticket sales and a half-full Silverstone. But those fears have been abated now by a reasonably strong TV ad campaign and lots of mentions on ITV’s F1 television broadcasts. Damon Hill (now President of the BRDC) has also helped to organise big screens to be erected around the circuit so fans of both F1 and football can enjoy the big match as well as qualifying.

Williams-Toyota For 2007

Posted on June 6th, 2006 by Oliver White

Williams Cosworth TestingIt seems that Williams have finally sorted out their long-term engine situation and have pencilled an agreement with Japanese giant, Toyota. Big Mac For Juan Pablo

Posted on June 5th, 2006 by Oliver White

BurgerJuan Pablo Montoya recently gave an interview to ITV’s F1 Pit Lane Reporter - Louise Goodman - and one answer stood out among all the others:

LG: What’s your favourite restaurant in the world?
JPM: Wow – that’s a difficult one. I wouldn’t know. Probably McDonalds!

Hmmm, not so sure what Ron Dennis would have to say about that one!

Should Shnaider Sell?

Posted on June 5th, 2006 by Oliver White

Alex Shnaider, owner of Midland F1It has again been reported that billionaire Alex Shnaider could be selling his Midland Formula One team. Rumours have dogged the team ever since it was bought from Eddie Jordan in January of last year.

Recently, Shnaider has denied these rumours, but has now said that a Dutch consortium has made him an offer that is “tempting”. Apparently, Michiel Mol (founder of the internet firm Lost Boys and backer of Christijan Albers) has offered the Canadian 100 million Euros for the outfit, which is putting Shnaider in a dilemma. According to Shnaider, he has “…invested more than just money in the team… I have invested my dreams” and that has put him in an agonising position.

I honestly wish I hadn’t received this offer.
Shnaider speaking to Toronto’s Globe & Mail Newspaper.

If I were to put money on it, I’d say he’ll be selling the F1 team to make a small profit. He apparently only spent $50 million on buying it in the first place!
